Tactual/Important Details Title: Publish Those Game Boards Make a different game board throughout the school year for your students. Use
the newsletter wizard of Microsoft's Publisher program. Here is a sample of the
game board. The PowerPoint shows step by step how to make a new game board for
your classroom.
itle: Furry Friends Idea: Before reading the book with the students read the book yourself and pick out the main points of the book. The teacher can run off pictures from the book and then cut them out and paste them onto a cardboard square. Whatever the object of the main idea is cover it with something that is touchable. An example is if the story is about a bird, copy a picture from the book that has a bird on it, paste it onto a cardboard square, and paste feathers on the bird. The students will then feel the picture and predict what they think the book will be about. Do this throughout the book so the students can predict while reading the book what they think will happen.
Title: Poetry Cubes Idea: You divide the students into groups and have each of them make a cube. Each side of the cube has a title of a poem on it. The title that they roll is the poem that group will work on. They must discuss within their group and come up with a way to act it out. For them to act it out, they must understand what their poem is about. This activity helps get the students actively thinking about their poem and what they are going to do. This can work with short stories as well. Resource: http://www.col-ed.org/cur/lang/lang50.txt
Title: Fuzzy Caterpillars Have the students read a book as a class. (Ex: The Very Hungry Caterpillar) Each student will then design a large circle with different types of materials, such as cotton balls, felt, or fuzzy paper to help create giant caterpillars to be placed around the room. Each student will be responsible for creating their circle, and placing an important detail about the story on each circle. This can be done either by writing their idea, or drawing a picture.
Title: Sandpaper Alphabet Idea: Use different types of sandpaper and cut out the letters of the alphabet. Make a set of small letters and capital letters. These letters could be used to help children identify the letters. Resource:
