Summarization

Date of Class: January 30, 2008

Summary of Class Session:

Milking the Book: We looked at the worksheet. The ones teaching kindergarten through second grade are supposed to read Chapter 12 in the textbook. The ones teaching third grade through fifth grade are supposed to read chapter 13. We discussed how to get the kids attention when first going into a classroom. The class needs to think of an introduction for their book and teachers MUST read the story before reading it to their students so there are no surprises.

We went over a fifth grade level book that had a lot of pictures. At first we may think that fifth graders should read chapter books but the book Pink and Say she gave an example of in class is an excellent picture book to start out fifth graders learning about the civil war. Dr. Sterling gave the class fifteen words and the class had to find the characters, settings, and the plots using the words. Than using the words we tried to guess the climax, than we skimmed through the story and looked at the pictures. By giving the class the words you can prepare the children for what is going to happen in the book.

We went through a poem where the words rhymed with ice. We had to make a bank of words that rhymed and had the ending sound eap. Than we had to make our own poem out of the words that we came up with. Dr. Sterling than shared a book called Sheep in a Jeep with the class that deals with eap words. This is an activity to do with students so they can understand how the author came up with this book. If you have a particular skill that you want your students to understand try to find a book that goes along with it.
